Following losing my job in today’s tumultuous job market, I looked into ways to make money from home. Many people have what is called a ‘side hustle’. This is additional work on the side of a regular job to earn more money. I wanted to see if I could create an income purely from various side hustle jobs from home.
It turns out there are many ways to earn legitimate income from home in your spare time.
If you love to write then freelance writing may be for you. This could be starting a blog like this one, using your knowledge and experiences to help others or just writing about your passion be it fashion, food or frugality!
Making money from a blog takes time and is certainly not a get-rich-quick scheme. You need to be determined, passionate and patient but it can be done!
There are numerous freelance sites that let anyone pitch for writing gigs. It can be difficult to be accepted for your very first writing job but just be resilient.
Put yourself forward for every listing that you can realistically do as once you get your first one, you are off! You can be paid by the word or per document and you can offer your own rate for most of these.
Check out sites such as:
Don’t be afraid to contact sites directly. The below welcome article pitches from anyone!
How are your typing skills? If you have a good grasp of English including grammar and punctuation then some decent money can be made doing audio transcription.
Not just for Medical and Legal Industries you can end up transcribing audio documents or even writing subtitles for films.
These are usually paid by the audio minute so the quicker you can accurately type, the better your hourly rate will be.
If you have a degree then there are many opportunities to teach your knowledge over the wonder of skype. I figured this would be geared towards to core subjects for students but you really can teach anything! These sites are primarily profile based where you list your skills and knowledge and set your own rates.
Not particularly the most consistent income to begin with but I have a few regular students that I tutor every week.
How do companies know if their website is user friendly, functional and ready to go live? By hiring website testers!
Usually paid per website, you need to thoroughly review a website from it’s appearance, functionality and accessibility.
They want to know if links are broken, or if it is hard to navigate.
Payment is usually made through Paypal every 7 days.
Some companies let you do the test then feedback but some like to video conference as you go through the website so a webcam is a must.
Bare in mind that as a reviewer you will be scored by the client so be as accurate and professional as possible. Higher reviews will get you more websites to test!
Surveys and Opinions
I am a member of a few groups that either want information through surveys and the like or they send me products etc to test and review.
Some surveys can take a long time but you are compensated by earning points. You can then choose to take your points as cash through paypal or vouchers for places such as Amazon.
Our daughter is currently doing a long survey (10min survey every week for 6 weeks) that is specifically for children between 7 and 12, talking about sports and computer games – she thinks it is great fun!
These are few of the things that I am currently doing to earn money at home.
